Terms & Conditions
Version 1.0 · Last updated 27 September 2026.
These terms govern your use of this website and your membership of The Open Society. By using this site or joining the club, you agree to them.
1. Who we are
The Open Society is a members' social club in Bengaluru, operated by Openhouse Club Private Limited, a company registered in India. In these terms, "the club", "we" and "us" mean that company.
2. What the club provides
We organise and host social events — a weekly gathering, a monthly supper, weekly activity sessions and occasional larger dinners — and we arrange access to certain third-party benefits. Membership is a subscription that gives you the right to attend those events and use those benefits.
That is the whole of what we provide.
3. What the club is not
The club is not, and does not hold itself out as:
- a dating, matchmaking or matrimonial service, and it must not be used as one;
- an escort, companionship or introduction-for-payment service;
- a recruitment, staffing or business-referral agency;
- a provider of therapy, counselling, medical or crisis services;
- a provider of legal, tax, financial or investment advice;
- the owner or licensee of any venue at which events are held.
Where we arrange access to a third-party service — a gym, a studio, a restaurant — we are introducing you to that provider. We do not provide that service, we do not supervise it, and your agreement for it is with the provider, not with us.
4. What we check, and what we do not
Every application is read by a person, and everyone shortlisted has a short call before joining. That is a judgement about whether someone is likely to enjoy the club.
It is not a background check. We do not conduct criminal record checks, verify identity documents or employment, run credit or reference checks, or carry out any form of safety screening. You must not assume that any other member has been checked in these ways, because they have not been.
5. Eligibility
You must be 18 or over to be a member. Some events are held at licensed premises where the legal minimum age in Karnataka applies — currently 21 — and you may not consume alcohol at them below that age.
Membership is personal to you. You may not share, lend, transfer or resell it, or let anyone else attend in your place.
6. Fees and tax
Fees are exclusive of tax; 18% GST is added at checkout. Payment is by mandate, and you will receive notice before each debit. There is no annual plan.
At the monthly supper you pay the restaurant directly for your own food and drink. We book the table; the bill is between you and the restaurant.
7. Refunds
Cancel within 7 days of a payment, having attended no event since it, and the whole amount comes back. After that, your unused time is refunded pro-rata by day, with the GST on it, less a 2% cancellation fee plus GST on that fee.
Removal for a trust violation or serious misconduct means no refund and no appeal.
Full detail is in our Refund & Cancellation Policy, which forms part of these terms.
8. Events and your own judgement
Club events are social gatherings between adults, in public and semi-public places.
You attend at your own risk, and you are responsible for your own safety, belongings, transport and decisions.
We are not responsible for the conduct of other members or their guests, at an event or in any contact between you afterwards.
We are not responsible for third-party venues, their premises, food, drink, service or staff. Venues are booked, not operated, by us.
Anything you arrange privately with another member is between the two of you. The club is not a party to it.
If something happens that worries you, tell us. We will take it seriously, and where someone's behaviour warrants it we will remove them. We are not an emergency service — if you are in danger, contact the police.
9. How members are expected to behave
- Treat other members and guests, venue staff and us with basic decency.
- Harassment, threatening or intimidating behaviour, or anything that makes another member feel unsafe ends membership immediately, with no refund.
- Do not use the club to sell, recruit, solicit, pitch or fundraise without our agreement.
- Do not use the club to pursue anyone romantically or sexually who has not made clear they welcome it.
Our Rules & Policies set out how conduct issues are handled and form part of these terms.
10. Confidentiality
Do not share, forward, screenshot or publish the member directory, member contact details, the weekly Digest, event details or conversations from club channels to anyone outside the club. Do not photograph or record other members at events without their agreement. Breach of this ends membership immediately, with no refund.
11. What we do not promise
- We do not promise that you will make friends, or get on with anyone in particular.
- We do not promise any particular member, venue or event.
- We may change the schedule, venues, formats and benefits. Events may be moved or cancelled. Third-party benefits depend on third parties and may change or end.
- We do not promise uninterrupted access to this website, the member app or our messaging channels.
12. Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law: we are not liable for loss, injury, damage or distress arising from the acts or omissions of other members, their guests, or third-party venues and providers; we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss; and where we are found liable, our total liability to you is limited to the membership fees you have paid in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing here excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded under Indian law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, and your rights under consumer protection legislation.
13. Ending membership
You can cancel at any time, in the app or by telling us. We can end or suspend membership for a trust violation, serious misconduct, non-payment or repeated no-shows. We may also end a membership for no fault — if you leave Bengaluru, for example — in which case the standard refund applies.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The current version and its date are always shown at the top of this page. Material changes to fees or refunds will be notified before they take effect and will not apply retrospectively to a period you have already paid for.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India. The courts at Bengaluru, Karnataka have exclusive jurisdiction.
